River first joined our rescue five years ago, and now through no fault of his own, he's back and looking for a fresh start. His devoted guardian loves him dearly but can no longer physically manage his strength on walks. River needs a more active, physically capable home that can give him the exercise and structure he thrives on.
Luckily, River is still the same gentle giant we fell in love with years ago. He's incredibly smart, highly treat motivated, and bonds deeply with his people. Once you're the treat giver, you're his favorite person!
Despite his large and sometimes intimidating appearance, River is truly a love bug at heart who adores human attention. He knows his basics like sit and shake, takes treats politely, and is wonderful with other dogs. He has excellent patience and social skills and would likely enjoy a canine companion. River does get excited on leash and can pull, especially when something catches his attention.
He's strong and enthusiastic, so he'll do best with an adopter who can confidently handle him and continue working on his leash manners. Ongoing training and structure will help him shine. A typical shepherd, he does have a prey drive; he is not suited for homes with horses and would likely chase wildlife. River would thrive in an active home that enjoys long walks, hikes, or even jogging. He makes a fantastic running partner! With the right guidance and exercise, he's an incredibly loyal, loving companion.
River came to us initially among a group of dogs POMDR pulled from Hitchcock Road Animal Shelter to help free up space for dogs being evacuated due to wildfires. He now is searching for his next home, as his adopter is unable to keep up with his care.
